What’s been happening?
In football, The male first team beat Newcastle-under-Lyme College on penalties to reach the quarter finals of the ECFA National Cup. Billy Goose struck twice as the team came from two goals behind to take the game to extra time. Two great saves from Connor Hutchinson in the shoot-out sparked great scenes at the end of the game.
Manager Luke Forgione, said: “I’m happy to progress into the last eight. Collectively we were very good in and out of possession. We showed resilience and character to bounce back, I’m pleased with the attitude shown.”
Our male second team also celebrated victory with a dominant 2-0 win away at Notre Dame College. Goals from Blade Mcnicholas and Dylan Briggs secured the three points.
Manager Kalam Neale, said: “It was a very professional team performance, we controlled the game in possession, even though the opposition tried everything to disrupt our play.
“We pressed quickly out of possession and defended excellently when under pressure in the final stages of the game. A fantastic squad effort from all 16 players.”
The male second team then travelled to Doncaster in the AOC Sport Futsal League. The team won all three games, coming from behind twice to beat Wakefield Colllege 12-5 and South Axholme Football Academy 8-3. The side made it a clean sweep by beating Sheffield College 5-3 in the final game.
The male third team recorded back-to-back wins against Greenhead College, beating them 4-3 and 5-4 in successive weeks.
Manager Ritchie Bywater, said: “The team showed a great attitude, we were a lot more comfortable than the scorelines suggest and it was good to come away with the wins.”
Congratulations to all our male footballers!
Our Netball Academy put on a strong performance this week. They beat Askham Bryan College 33-26 at home. A great victory for the girls, well done to everyone involved. Meanwhile, our Basketball Academy lost to Leeds City College and our Female Football Academy were knocked out of the ECFA National Cup. Better luck next time to both teams.
In other Sports Academy news, two of our students were selected for English Colleges FA in their Academy Cup encounter with Ipswich Town Women. Ellie Hawcroft captained the side in the first leg and Betty Cheetham scored in the second. Both students will travel to Italy with the English Colleges FA for the Caput Mundi tournament next week. We are incredibly proud of both Ellie and Betty for their continued success.
Finally, a huge well done to our Inclusive Academy who took part in an AOC Sport Pan-Disability Football Tournament in Leeds which included our Disability Ambassador Leon Hilmi. Leon’s role is in association with Sheffield & Hallamshire County Football Association. Together we aim to promote and improve disability football. A combined team which involved Barnsley College students were triumphant in the final. A great experience for the students.
