On Tuesday 18 June we held our annual Sport, Public Services and Travel and Tourism Celebration Evening. Students and staff came together to celebrate all the academic and sporting achievements our students have made throughout the year. Congratulations to all our students who went home with an award.
A special mention goes to our Sport and Physical Activity Co-Ordinator, Amanda Sowerby, who was the recipient of the prestigious Shane Jackson Award. The award is presented to a staff member who has gone beyond the call of duty for the department. Amanda has done a fantastic job in encouraging students from across College to become more physically active. Amanda was also the brains behind the College’s ‘Barnsley Smile’ Race for Life Event which raised over £3,000 for Cancer Research UK.

Student athlete competes in international tournament
Level 3 Sport and Exercise Science student Sophie Ormrod recently travelled to Luxembourg to take part in a Taekwondo tournament. Sophie won in the first round beating Norwegian opposition, but unfortunately lost in the second round to a Swiss athlete.
Sophie said: “I enjoyed the competition. I had a new coach and I felt my performance was better than earlier in the year. He was very encouraging and it gives me hope for future events this year in Poland and Romania!
“I was pleased to win my first round match, particularly as I was fighting in a new weight category. It was great to have the support of the Elite Sports Bursary that covered my expenses and enabled me to travel to Luxembourg.”
Well done Sophie! The Elite Sports Bursary is part of our commitment in supporting talented College athletes achieve their sporting aims and goals. For more information on how students can apply go to: www.barnsley.ac.uk/bsa
